Sun Mullet: Smart Sun Protection Made Easy

“Sunscreens should not be the first choice for skin cancer prevention and should not be used as the sole agent for protection against the sun.” – International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), 2001

While the effectiveness of sunscreens is debatable, many skin-care experts agree that sufficient sun protection begins with proper clothing coverage.

Coverage Where You Need it Most

The Sun Mullet works by blocking the sun’s harmful rays on an area often neglected by normal attire. Simply slip the Sun Mullet over your favorite hat and enjoy the benefits of a safe, stylish outdoor experience—without exposing yourself to the risks of sunburn.

Frequently Asked Questions

1) Am I at risk for sun cancer?

According to the American Cancer Society, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States—with up to 90% being sun-related. Anyone who spends time outdoors inherits a risk of prolonged exposure to ultraviolet rays, which have been linked to painful sunburn, accelerating skin aging and skin cancer.

2) What is a Sun Mullet?

Glad you asked! Research has shown that dense, tight construction minimizes the amount of UV light that can pass through fabric—therefore eliminating the risk of overexposure when worn. With this knowledge, we developed the Sun Mullet with material offering a UV-reducing ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) of 50+, which keeps you cool and protected from harmful rays.

It’s fun, it’s stylish, and kids love it, all while keeping you safe and sunburn-free when working, playing or relaxing outside.

3) What is UPF Fabric Rating?

Unlike SPF (Sun Protection Factor), which traditionally uses human sunburn testing in a laboratory environment, UPF measures both UVA (which does not cause reddening or pain) and UVB (the ultraviolet radiation that causes sunburn) radiation transmittance through an artificial light source using a spectroradiometer. The results are analyzed and categorized following the sunburn action spectrum (erythema action spectrum), which is integrated over the UV spectrum based on exposure severity.

Developed in 1998 by Committee RA106, the testing standard for sun protective fabrics in the United States is the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists (AATCC) Test Method 183. This method is based on the original guidelines established in Australia in 1994. Below is the Australian/New Zealand Standard for Sun Protective Clothing and Swimwear, which is now considered the industry standard in rating such sun protective clothing:

UPF Ratings and Protection Categories:

UPF Rating

Protection Category

 % UV radiation Blocked

UPF 15 – 24 Good 93.3 – 95.9
UPF 25 – 39 Very Good 96.0 – 97.4
UPF 40 – 49 Excellent 97.5 or more
UPF50+ Considered the Ultimate in UV Sun Protection

4) Why can’t I just wear sunscreen?

While some levels of SPF lotions are capable of blocking the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun, many of us often apply these lotions too thinly, which gives our skin less protection than the sunscreen’s available SPF rating. It’s also much too easy to forget to reapply it past its effectiveness. Additionally, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) is one of many public health agencies that recommend taking other measures before using sunscreens—namely clothing coverage.

5) Is the Sun Mullet right for my child?

Skin-care experts estimate that a sizeable percentage of our sun exposure occurs before the age 18. Also, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that just a few serious sunburns can greatly increase a child’s risk for developing skin cancer later in life. So, proper sun protection should definitely start in childhood. Clothing coverage is a reliable form of sun protection for children, especially for those who are not fond of applying and reapplying sunscreen. The Sun Mullet is one size fits all and available in a number of cool colors sure to please any child.

7) I don’t live in a tropical area. Would the Sun Mullet benefit me?

Many people associate sunburns and UV exposure to warm weather climates and locales. However, harmful UV exposure is greater and more dangerous at higher altitudes. Luckily, the Sun Mullet can be worn from the sand to the slopes! If you’re a skier or hiker, simply slip the Sun Mullet over—or under—your favorite wool hat or “beanie.”
